Roblealto Childcare Association (San Jose, Costa Rica)
Roblealto currently serves over 850 children through three day care centers, a temporary shelter with a Christian school, and a teen program. The typical family served by Roblealto is parented by a single mother, earns monthly income of less than $400 and, in over 40% of the cases, experiences some form of domestic abuse. Children under Roblealto's care benefit from education, nutrition, Christian teaching, and a safe environment during the day, enabling their parents to work. In addition, a team of clinical professionals develop an integrated treatment plan for each child aimed at comprehensive rehabilitation for the entire family. Each child's case is reviewed annually with Costa Rica's National Child Welfare Institution. Roblealto's ministry is highly respected by the Costa Rican government and is seen as the model for treatment of children and families in poverty.
Roblealto also owns and operates five businesses to support it's children's ministry. This business as missions initiative in agribusiness began as a means to provide food for the children and has since evolved into the largest producer of poultry layer genetics in the country. Hatching over six million birds a year in two facilities, Roblealto supplies nearly 80% of the Costa Rican market. Profits from the businesses are contributed to the children's programs. In 2010 the businesses supplied approx 16% of the children's needs. It is a successful model of Kingdom business.
Steve & Gay Mean
IAP's involvement with Roblealto, began when it joined forces with Costa Rican-based businessman Steve Mean in 2010. Various in-country site visits have enabled IAP representatives to become familiar with the business. Through a number of initiatives including board development, strategic planning and management advising, Steve and local leadership have been supported to help the business become a leader in its markets and a witness to its peers. Today, Roblealto is a practical, working example of how a profitable business can be used to fight poverty and help children at risk.
